I have been sick for about a week and am craving something other than soup. My family and I love creating “Nourish Bowls” and I wanted to share how we make them with you.
Nourish Bowls are all rage these days, and there are many stories as to their origins. Originally called a “Buddha Bowl” it is thought they were called this because the bowl resembles the Buddha’s round belly. There are others who say it originates from the ’60’s or ’70’s during the reign of the brown rice and veggie stage for vegetarians. Whatever it’s history, the Nourish Bowl of today has become
the new way of eating healthy.
Your Nourish Bowl should consist of healthy greens, raw or roasted veggies, cooked grain (rice, quinoa, etc.), protein in the form of beans, chickpeas or tofu, (and yes you make use meat) a crunchy topping (nuts and seeds) and a dressing.
Unlike a salad, the greens are not the stars of your bowl; they should be minimal and can even be left out. At our house we don’t use greens so that the bowl packs more of a punch and doesn’t seem like a side dish.
Your dressing should be used sparingly. I have two healthy favorites, one I blogged about here and the other is a Lemony Tahini Dressing: In a small jar mix 1/2 cup tahini, the juice from two lemons and 1/4 cup water. Shake or whisk well.
